AI Education Mode

An AI Tutor strictly for learning.

No providing answers.
No doing the work for you.
No personal conversations.

Encourage learning by removing the temptation for academic dishonesty.

For macOS & Windows Computers

Encourages Learning and Critical Thinking — Not Cheating

AI Education Mode applies guardrails that prevents ChatGPT from providing answers. Instead, it responds like a tutor, encouraging learning and critical thinking.

Focused Tutors and Assistants for Enhanced Learning

AI produces the best outputs when it has a narrow focus. AI Education Mode includes custom ChatGPT tools (GPTs) that we have developed to create a more accurate and helpful learning experience.

Connections to Tools for Improved Accuracy

AI models like ChatGPT can get math wrong, so we've integrated external tools into our custom tutors to enhance accuracy for math and science.

Enterprise-level Browser Policies Enforce Academic Honesty

AI Education Mode operates in a "locked down" Chrome browser, which enforces policies that prevent workarounds and the use of other AI tools.

Not a Friend, Companion or Counselor — Just a Tutor

AI Safety is part of our core values, and we have serious concerns about AI companions. AI Education Mode prevents ChatGPT from engaging in personal conversations.

Our Custom Tutors Ensure Learning and Accuracy

  • Provides guidance, not answers, by walking the student step-by-step through math problems. Connects to a 3rd-party tool to check and ensure accuracy.

Provides writing feedback and helps a student improve grammar and writing skills, but will not do any writing for them.

Provides guidance, not answers, by walking the student through scientific concepts. Connects to a 3rd-party tool to check and ensure accuracy.

  • Provides high-quality sources for research papers and reports, and will not generate written summaries or content that can be copied into an assignment.

Creates high-quality visualizations for topics in math and science that can be used to explain concepts and enhance learning.

ELI stands for "Explain Like I'm..." — it is a learning tool that explains topics and concepts at the age or grade-level that you specify.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

AI Education Mode is subscription-based in order to cover our own costs to offer it. We are reguarly updating the guardrails, improving the custom tools (tutors) and creating new ones. In addition, tools such as our math and science tutors incur fees due to integrations with additional resources. We aim to keep the recurring fee as low as possible in order to be affordable for anyone.

Your subscription covers use by an entire household, and can be used across multiple computers in the household.

When you subscribe, you will receive access to a setup tool that will guide you through the process of customizing ChatGPT and enrolling Google Chrome into AI Education Mode. The tool includes easy-to-follow written and video guides, along with an AI chatbot that can help in case you have any questions. The entire process should take 15 minutes or less to complete.

Parent-Focused Questions

ChatGPT's chat history feature allows you to see any interactions. A child/student is not prevented from deleting chats, but the strict guardrails that are enforced will prevent academic dishonesty, and refuse engagement in personal matters.

The combination of a limited user account (in macOS or Windows) and enterprise-level browser policies ensures that it is nearly impossible for tech-savvy users to disable or bypass the restrictions.

AI Education Mode is unable to enforce all of the restrictions on mobile devices that it can on a Mac or PC. This is a technical limitation due to the differences between mobile and desktop operating systems.

As part of an AI Education Mode subscription, we provide guidance and resources for limiting the use of phones and/or tablets to get around the restrictions that AI Education Mode enforces on a computer. Apple's Screen Time and Google Family Link are the primary tools for enforcing restrictions on mobile devices, and we proivde guidance on how to leverage those tools for this purpose.

Technical Questions

Yes and no. The ChatGPT customizations (instructions and tools) can be added to ChatGPT on any device, but a savvy user can remove the instructions that restrict ChatGPT to interacting as a tutor.

The other features of AI Education Mode can only be enabled on a Mac or PC computer. For the most foolproof, "locked down" experience, a computer running macOS or Windows is necessary.

No. We hope to offer Chromebook support in the future, but the technical requirements are completely different than Mac or PC computers.

No. AI Education Mode works without a paid subscription, though a free account is required. A free ChatGPT account includes usage limits such as a cap on messages per hour, slower performance during peak times, and fewer features.

Note: Our Concept Visualizer tool can consume a large amount of usage (tokens) and may not work well on free accounts.

ChatGPT Tiers Comparison

  1. The Chrome browser enrollment into AI Education Mode will impact ALL USERS of the computer. If you share the computer with your student, you will need to have separate user accounts, and you will likely want to use a different browser (Safari, Brave, Edge, etc) in your account. The setup instructions will help you create separate user accounts, if you haven't done that already.

  2. Your student(s) needs to be set up with an account in either Apple Family Sharing or Microsoft Family Safety. This will allow you to configure restrictions as part of the setup process. If you currently enforce screen time restrictions for Apple or Microsoft devices, then you already have this set up. If not, the setup instructions will guide you through this.

The policies and restrictions that prevent academic dishonesty are largely put in place by enrolling the Google Chrome web browser into our educational management system, which automatically enforces the rules that keep AI use productive and honest.

We provide you with instructions for enrolling the Chrome browser, and once enrolled, we keep it up-to-date with guardrails that prevent access to other AI tools, and enable features such as a custom Google search experience that is curated by educators.

Yes, for AI Education Mode to fully work as designed, Google Chrome is necessary in order to apply guardrails and policies that enforce educational use.

AI is most effective when it is given context with a narrow focus. The custom GPTs (tutors and assistants) have been developed with very focused instructions in order to provide better outputs than the general purpose ChatGPT model.

Many custom GPTs that are available for ChatGPT have been created with very basic instructions, and their outputs are not any more valuable than the general ChatGPT model. We have spent a lot of time developing our tutors and assistants to produce helpful, accurate responses that will benefit the user. Our math and science tutors incorporate external tools that allow the GPTs to verify their responses for accuracy — something that even the general ChatGPT model does not do.
